Virginia Master Naturalist Program
Across the nation people are trying to do their fair share to help the environment. Some go well beyond life-style choices. They go the extra mile to bolster the efforts of existing governmental natural resource agencies through volunteering, citizen science, and educating themselves in various natural history topics. Here in the commonwealth, you can do this by becoming a Virginia Master Naturalist. Master Naturalists gain certification by undergoing a balanced, state approved course in natural history and providing dedicated volunteer service.
The Virginia Master Naturalist program started on April 24, 2006. The program is modeled after the very successful Master Gardener program administered by the Virginia Cooperative Extension Service. Its mission is simple: to develop a well-informed corps of volunteers to provide education, outreach and service dedicated to the beneficial management of natural resources and natural areas within their communities.
There are about 25 chapters statewide. Interested private citizens and local environmental groups have decided it's about time that was remedied. They want to become better environmental stewards, assist their local parks, and train themselves as Virginia Master Naturalists.
